Girl Scout Cookie CFL Partnership

Tucson Electric Power (TEP) and the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona are working together to distribute 100,000 free compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs  that will be distributed throughout the community during cookie sales.

The bulbs are provided through TEP’s Energy Star Lighting program, which makes CFL bulbs available from local stores at discounts of up to 50 percent off of regular retail prices. CFLs consume approximately 75 percent less energy than comparable incandescent bulbs and can last up to 10 times as long.

TEP estimates that if all the CFL bulbs distributed during this year’s cookie sales are installed, cookie buyers will collectively save enough electricity to power more than 400 homes for a full year. That’s a cost savings of $500,000.Girls will be distributing CFL bulbs at many of the cookie booths located around the community and at many other community events this year including:

  • Tucson Festival of Books – Saturday, March 9th to Sunday, March 10th
  • Tucson Earth Day– Sunday, April 21st

“We are grateful to TEP for partnering with the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona this year,” said Debbie Rich, chief executive officer for the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona. “It is vital for us to teach our girls the importance of implementing environmentally conscious practices into their daily life. These donated CFL bulbs will not only let us help the community but also help us teach smart energy use in our program, Girl Scouts Forever Green.”

TEP is a proud supporter of the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona’s education and enrichment activities. Last year, TEP awarded a $10,000 grant to the organization for science, technology, engineering and mathematics enrichment programs.
