‘Power Walking’ South Tucson

This spring, representatives from Tucson Electric Power, the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the City of South Tucson walked door-to-door, speaking with small business owners about energy efficiency.

The group offered free TEP energy efficiency assessments to business owners in the area to help them identify ways to save energy and money.

Energy efficiency assessments are free for all TEP commercial accounts. The assessments are performed by certified TEP trade partners.

“Reaching out to local businesses not only will improve communication and relationships in the community, but also offers potential benefits as a result of TEP’s energy efficiency assessments,” South Tucson City Manager Benny Young said.

Added Lea Márquez Peterson, President and CEO of the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce: “This is a win-win for our small business community, and we look forward to expanding the Power Walk model into other communities.”

The assessments are part of the TEP’s EasySave program, which incentivizes businesses that install or upgrade lighting, AC/HVAC, motors, thermostats, occupancy sensors and more. For a complete list of incentives, visit the EasySave page on tep.com.

Ricardo Cazares, who received an energy assessment for his business, Alejandro’s Tortilla Factory, discovered he would save $5,500 a year by installing LED lights and upgrading a cooler motor. The TEP EasySave program provided nearly $8,000 in rebates to offset the investment.

“Working with TEP has been a true partnership,” Cazares said. “TEP has helped me reduce my energy costs and improve my bottom line.”

The savings TEP found for Alejandro’s are not unusual. “Since 2013, we have distributed $1.4 million in rebates to more than 345 small businesses in our service area,” TEP Commercial Energy Advisor Randy Altergott said.
