Be a Net Zero Hero

Tucson Electric Power is working to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 while keeping energy affordable and reliable. But we can’t do it alone: we need your help.

By taking simple steps to save energy and shifting usage to periods when we have more wind and solar power available, you can help us fight climate change by reducing our community’s carbon footprint. In this way, anyone can be a Net Zero Hero.

Help Us Recognize Sustainable Businesses

We’re looking for local businesses and nonprofits that champion sustainability, spearhead innovation and make thoughtful choices about the environment in their business models.

We’re taking nominations now for our Net Zero Hero Awards that recognize organizations for reducing their environmental footprint or otherwise making contributions toward a more sustainable future.

Our Commitment

Work toward net zero direct greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, with an 80 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2035.

Our new net zero goal extends our ongoing efforts to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. It's an aspirational target, reflecting our confidence that advancements in technologies such as long-duration storage, carbon capture and sequestration, hydrogen generation and small modular reactors will emerge as cost effective options. But it also builds on the real results we've achieved since 2020, when TEP committed to reducing CO2 emissions 80 percent by 2035.

That target, developed in partnership with the University of Arizona’s Institute of the Environment, represents our community’s fair share of worldwide efforts to limit warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius under the 2015 Paris Agreement.

We’re already more than a third of the way to that CO2 reduction target, thanks to our new wind and solar power systems. So now we’re aiming higher – or rather, lower: net zero direct greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

This ambitious goal is aligned with our 2023 Integrated Resource Plan, which outlines the next steps we’ll take to transition to less carbon-intensive resources while maintaining reliable, affordable service. In addition to supporting our carbon reduction goal, our latest plan will reduce water use by 80 percent while supporting reliable service at a lower cost than other possible portfolios.

Save energy

The best, most effective way to be a Net Zero Hero is by saving energy. We can help, with energy saving programs and rebates designed to make it easy and affordable to upgrade the efficiency of your home or business. You can shop for low-cost energy saving products in our TEP Marketplace, including advanced power strips and smart thermostats that can help you manage your whole home’s energy use.

Shift your usage

Shift your usage to periods when we have higher levels of wind and solar power. Solar power is usually most abundant during midday hours, while our wind farms are generally most productive during the early morning and later in the evening, after the sun sets. You can use our Clean Energy Tracker to keep tabs on our wind and solar production throughout the day.

Defeat the peak

During the hot summer months, clean energy levels are typically at their lowest during the “on-peak” hours of 3-7 p.m. because usage is rising while the sun is setting. Reducing usage during those hours can help us Defeat the Peak, supporting greater reliability, lower costs and reduced carbon emissions.

Go solar

You can also help us work toward net zero carbon emissions by going solar, either with a rooftop solar array or by participating in our GoSolar Shares program. Driving an electric vehicle can also reduce the carbon emissions associated with transportation, contributing to a smaller carbon footprint for our entire community.

Suit Up

You don’t need a colorful uniform to be a Net Zero Hero – but it’s definitely more fun that way.
