TEP Qualified Installer Program
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Qualified Installer Program?
The Qualified Installer Program (QIP) is a list of solar installers who meet strict eligibility requirements and have completed training on TEP price plans and the TEP interconnection process. Customers can choose any installer they prefer, but this list is meant to be a resource to help customers simplify their research and selection process.
What are the requirements for these installers?
You can find the program's minimum eligibility requirements here. Among other criteria, the Qualified Installers must:
- Hold an active solar license granted by the Arizona Registrar of Contractors
- Hold and maintain an active and good standing business registration approved by the Arizona Corporation Commission
- Hold appropriate insurance and worker's compensation
- Have been in business for 36 months under the same Arizona Registrar of Contractors license and under the same corporate name
- Hold and maintain appropriate insurance and worker’s compensation
- Have and maintain a physical location within greater Tucson area where customers can visit
How can I verify if someone is a Qualified Installer?
It is very important to check that anyone claiming to be a Qualified Installer is actually on TEP’s list. The official list is available here, but can also be verified by TEP’s Customer Care team, available to assist you weekdays, 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. at 520-623-7711.
All Qualified Installers should be using the official program logo, which can be found on this page. The official logo includes a QR code that you can scan, which will take you to TEP’s website page with the list of Qualified Installers.
Do Qualified Installers work for TEP?
No, qualified installers do not work for TEP, are not representatives of TEP, and their work is not guaranteed by TEP. Being a Qualified Installer means that they have applied and meet the criteria for our Qualified Installer Program. Please see our full disclaimer here.
Are Qualified Installers only for Solar?
The Qualified Installer Program is currently focused on solar and energy storage installers. Our website’s Qualified Installer list shows whether each installer is approved for solar, energy storage, or both. If they are not listed for solar or energy storage, it does not mean they do not offer that service, only that they did not meet our minimum requirements.
If an installer is not on the Qualified Installer list, does that mean they are a bad installer?
No. Installation companies may not appear on the list because they chose not to apply, have not been in business long enough, do not have an office located in the greater Tucson area, or any other number of reasons. It does not mean they are a “bad” installer if they are not on the list; just that they have not applied or have not met the minimum eligibility requirements for the Qualified Installer Program.
Can you refer me to a specific installer?
We cannot refer you to a specific installer, but using our Qualified Installer list is a great way to get started in your selection process. We recommend speaking with several installers before choosing. You can find some suggested questions to ask on our Rooftop Solar for Homeowners page in the “Is Your Home a Good Fit for Solar?” section.
What do I do if I have an issue with a Qualified Installer or a company claiming to be a Qualified Installer?
If you have an issue with a Qualified Installer, or a company claiming to be a Qualified Installer, please reach out to our Customer Care team to share the details of what happened and the name of the company. This information helps us monitor our program and identify potential concerns, though outcomes may vary based on the circumstances. Customer Care is available to assist you on weekdays from 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. at 520-623-7711.
