TEP Smart Charge

Smart Charge is TEP’s EV managed charging program. The program aims to shift EV charging away from times of peak demand on our electric grid. Participants are compensated for enrollment in the program, and for adhering to their automated charging schedule developed by WeaveGrid, a contractor for TEP.

To be eligible to enroll, you must:

• Be a TEP residential electric customer (up to two vehicles may enroll per TEP account)
• Take service on an eligible pricing plan:
  • TRRES (Basic), TRREST (Time-of-Use), TRRESD (Peak Demand), TRRESDT (Residential Demand Time-of-Use R-Tech), TRRSP (Special Residential Service), TRRSPT (Special Residential Service Time-of-Use), or TRDSOTE (Electric Vehicle Demand Super Off Peak).
• Enroll with an eligible EV or EV charger:
  • Eligible EVs: Tesla (all models, years, and trims)
  • Eligible EV chargers: Chargepoint (Home Flex CPH25 or CPH50), Wallbox (Pulsar Plus), Emporia (all EV charger models)
• Agree to the full program Terms and Conditions

"Smart" times are the best times to charge your electric vehicle at home as determined by WeaveGrid and TEP based on your pricing plan, preferences, and grid conditions. "Smart" times generally correspond with times when your electricity costs are lowest, demand on the grid is not at peak, and renewable energy is most abundant. While they generally overlap with "off-peak" charging times, as more vehicles connect to the grid, "Smart" times may become increasingly variable and dynamic.

On your dashboard, you’ll notice a "Smart" times percentage that is calculated from the last 7 days. This represents your smart score. The score represents the amount of home charging you’ve done that occurs within the optimized schedules created by WeaveGrid.

The Smart Score is calculated by dividing the amount of energy your vehicle consumed during "Smart" times, by the total energy that you consumed charging at home over a given time period.

You can increase your Smart Score by plugging in whenever you are home, and by minimizing the times you override the optimized schedules generated for you by WeaveGrid.

For enrolling in the Smart Charge program, you'll receive a $20 bill credit approximately 1-2 billing cycles after your enrollment is accepted once you:

• Maintain a continuous device connection to WeaveGrid for at least 30 days after enrollment (you don't need to stay plugged in constantly – just keep the connection active)
• Remain a TEP residential electric customer

For participating each month, you'll receive a $10 bill credit the following month if you:

• Maintain a monthly Smart Score at least 85%
• Have at least one home charging event per month
• Remain a TEP residential electric customer

When you sign up for WeaveGrid, you establish a connection to your vehicle or home charging station that grants WeaveGrid access to your vehicle’s charging data. Learn more here.

No. Regardless if you register for the program via your vehicle or home charger, WeaveGrid’s smart charging schedule will only manage charging at your home location.

You can override a smart charging schedule at any time. Here’s how, depending on how you’re connected to WeaveGrid:

• Tesla vehicles: Cancel from your vehicle’s console or Tesla app. You can also text “CHARGE NOW” to 59972 to start charging immediately, or tap ‘CHARGE NOW’ from the WeaveGrid dashboard or app.
• ChargePoint or Wallbox chargers: Use your charger’s interface or app to override the schedule. You can also text “CHARGE NOW” to 59972, or tap ‘CHARGE NOW’ from the WeaveGrid dashboard or app.
• Emporia chargers: After plugging in, open the Emporia app and tap ‘Charge Now’ to cancel the schedule.

If you need to change your vehicle’s “Time to be at battery level”, or the charger’s “Time to be charged”, you can customize your schedule settings from your WeaveGrid dashboard or app.

Note: Overriding your schedule can lower your smart score and may disqualify you from your monthly participation incentive.

Up to two vehicles per account are eligible to earn rewards through the program.

Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis until the first 500 vehicles are enrolled. Currently, the pilot program is planned for one year, beginning June 29, 2026. This program is subject to regulatory approvals. In the event of changes in the program scope or duration, notice may be provided at https://www.tep.com/smart-charge/.

WeaveGrid uses the information gathered from your vehicle or charger to determine how much energy you use to charge at home. The estimated charging cost includes estimated kWh-based Energy Charges and Base Power Supply Charges based on your TEP pricing plan. Costs do not account for fixed costs, earned credits from solar exports, or any incurred demand charges, if applicable. For rates with tiered Energy Charges, EV charging is assumed to fall in the 501 - 1,000 kWh range based on average charging and home usage.

While WeaveGrid strives to provide you with accurate information, these charges are an estimate. If you participate in other programs that impact your rates, this information may not be reflected in your estimated charging costs. This means that your bill may present information differently than the total spend estimated on WeaveGrid.

Signing up for the program won’t affect your rate. If you are on a time-of-use rate, WeaveGrid optimizes your charging schedule based on your off-peak, super-off peak (if applicable) and on-peak hours.

If you prefer to charge exclusively during off-peak times, you can also enable ‘Only lowest cost charging’. Learn more about this and other charge preferences here.

Note for customers on demand-based pricing plans: WeaveGrid’s scheduling accounts for TEP’s on- and off-peak times, where applicable. However, WeaveGrid does not have visibility into the electric usage in your home outside of your EV charging. Because of this, you should closely review your EV charging schedule and consider it alongside the rest of your electric usage in your home to determine if the program will be a good fit for you. TEP and WeaveGrid are not responsible for any changes in your charging costs during the program.
