Overview

Sometimes, just by changing when we do things, we can save money - like flying a red-eye, getting off-season hotel rates or going to a matinee movie. Now you can get the same kind of non-prime-time discounts from TEP. It’s all part of the Time-of-Use monthly pricing plan. By shifting the majority of your electricity usage to off-peak hours, you can save money and help support a cleaner environment.

How does Time-of-Use work?

Time-of-Use works by shifting energy usage from higher-priced (on-peak) time periods to lower-priced (off-peak) time periods. Customers who shift their usage will benefit with reduced pricing during off-peak hours. So first shift, then save.

Enrolling in a Time-of-Use pricing plan is free, including the installation of a new electric meter. With Time-of-Use, the time of day will determine how much you pay for each kilowatt-hour (kWh), so the new meter will track your actual time of use. When calculating your bill, TEP will apply the appropriate rate to the kWh used in each different time period.

Changes in your household’s energy habits may be necessary. Timing is everything! The more you are able to shift usage away from peak hours, the better off you’ll be. Savings will vary based on individual usage patterns.

Ideas on how to shift your electric use:

  • Set timers on pool or spa pumps to run during off-peak hours.
  • Operate washing machines, clothes dryers, dishwashers and non-essential appliances during off-peak hours.
  • Adjust your air conditioning thermostat to a higher temperature and heater to a lower temperature during on-peak hours or when you are not at home.
  • Install timers on electric water heaters and recirculation pumps so they operate mainly during off-peak hours.
  • Turn off all but essential lights during on-peak hours.
  • Enjoy recreational baking and electricity-consuming hobbies during the off-peak hours.

Time-of-Use helps all of us

By conserving and shifting your usage, you also help reduce the need for us to build and operate new power generation stations, which saves everyone money and even helps protect the environment.
