Join Energy Storage Rewards and Earn Rewards While Powering a More Resilient Grid
A Typical Battery Could Earn $720 Per Year
Enroll your qualifying battery system in TEP’s Energy Storage Rewards program and get paid to help during times of peak energy demand. When TEP uses the energy stored in your battery to power your home, you’ll receive $120 per kilowatt (kW), averaged over all events in the summer or winter season.
For a typical battery system, that’s about $360 per season — or up to $720 per year in rewards. It’s a smart way to support the grid, reduce energy costs, and make the most of your battery investment.
Help your community and earn money — it’s a win-win!

How Does the Program Work?

Energy Storage Rewards Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible to enroll, you must:
- Be a TEP residential electric customer with the electric service in your name.
- Have a grid-connected qualifying battery system and your battery must perform in accordance with what is in your interconnection agreement.
- Ensure the name and address listed for your TEP account and for your battery are the same.
- Allow your battery manufacturer to send signals to control your battery to make periodic adjustments to your battery’s charge and discharge schedule.
- Maintain a reliable continuous internet connection with your installed battery.
- Customers who participate in TEP GoSolar Shares are eligible to participate in this program.
- Customers who participate in TEP Owned Residential Solar and TEP GoSolar Home are not eligible to participate in this program.

Program Parameters
Battery events through the TEP Energy Storage Program will signal your battery system to automatically charge and discharge to support the grid on peak demand days. The program is based on the following:
- TEP may call up to a maximum of 100 events per year.
- Only 1 event can be called per day.
- Events may be between 1-4 hours in duration. TEP anticipates 80% of events will be 2-3 hours in duration.
- Events may occur any day of the week, including holidays.
- This is a year-round program divided into two seasons.
- The summer season runs from May through September.
- The winter season runs from October through April.
- Summer events are targeted for weekdays from 6-9 pm and weekends from 3-7 pm, but timing may vary.
- TEP will make reasonable attempts to avoid scheduling events when notable storms are forecasted but may not account for outages resulting from isolated weather events.
- You can opt out at any time.
How Compensation Is Calculated
TEP’s VPP battery events call upon your battery system to automatically charge and discharge to support the grid on days with anticipated high peak demand. Your end-of-season compensation will be based on the average kW that your battery delivers during all event hours of the season. That average performance may vary depending upon your battery system size and configuration, the number of events, event length, internet connectivity, and other factors.
To demonstrate how your battery’s average kW will be calculated, we prepared the table below with a fictional customer’s battery performance over an 8-event season. A real season will have more events, but the way we calculate payment will be the same.
Event | Event Length | Total Energy Delivered | Average Capacity Delivered |
---|---|---|---|
Event 1 | 3 hours | 9 kWh | 3 kW |
Event 2 | 2 hours | 9 kWh | 4.5 kW |
Event 3 | 1 hours | Opted out of entire event | 0 kW |
Event 4 | 4 hours | 9 kWh | 2.25 kW |
Event 5 | 2 hours | 9 kWh | 4.5 kW |
Event 6 | 3 hours | 9 kWh | 3 kW |
Event 7 | 2 hours | 9 kWh | 4.5 kW |
Event 8 | 4 hours | 9 kWh | 2.25 kW |
This customer’s average performance over the season would be calculated as follows:

The end-of-season compensation amount to be paid for this fictional customer would then be calculated as follows:

Compensation payments will be provided as a TEP utility bill credit that will be issued approximately 2-3 billing cycles after the end of the season. For this reason, you must remain a TEP customer to receive payment.
