Students at Sunnyside High School will learn the latest in electric vehicle technology at updated auto shop facilities, thanks in part to Tucson Electric Power’s support.

Sunnyside is the only Southern Arizona high school with an electric vehicle training program as part of its automotive classes. The school unveiled its upgraded facilities at a ceremony in April.

“Teachers in career-technical education take advice and direction from industry partners like TEP,” said David Ramirez, Sunnyside’s Automotive Instructor. “Our supporters had the vision to help us train students in electric vehicles. It all part of an effort to keep up with industry standards.”

TEP provided an in-kind assessment of Sunnyside’s facilities and technical capabilities that enabled the school to establish the EV program on campus, said Elizabeth Soltero, Chief Executive Officer of Sunnyside Foundation.

Through our longtime partnership, TEP provides funding for college and career preparation pathways and mini grants, in which teachers and classrooms can obtain funding for their own projects.

In addition, TEP donated electric vehicle chargers that were no longer being used so that students could have the opportunity for hands-on work.

“TEP is proud to support Sunnyside in the integration of electric vehicle technology into their automotive classes,” said Gabby Abou-Zeid, TEP’s Program Manager of Transportation Electrification. “We believe in empowering students with the knowledge and tools to drive the future of sustainable transportation in our community.”

Students are excited to be able to learn cutting-edge technology and prepare for future careers, Ramirez said. Other partners contributed funding and donations to Sunnyside’s auto shop, including a Tesla that students will be able to work on.

Edward Machado, a 17-year-old junior who was enrolled in his third auto class in spring 2025, is planning a career in the automotive field. After high school, he hopes to attend Pima Community College’s program. Sunnyside’s classes will give him an opportunity to get ahead on new technology.

“That’s the future of cars,” Edward said about electric vehicles. “I’m really appreciative of the donations and work put into this to bring the EV program to Sunnyside.”
