Customers helped optimize our local energy grid this summer by allowing TEP to make small, temporary adjustments to their thermostats during the hottest days. These shifts in demand supported more efficient energy distribution during periods of high usage.

The Smart Rewards program, which recently concluded its third summer season, was successful in saving energy and costs for our overall system. Participants receive gift cards for enrolling.

About 18,000 customers registered 22,000 thermostats, which worked together to save energy over 10 events. On average, each event saved the equivalent energy use of 9,700 homes.

“We’re seeing great results and benefits from this program. We’re so grateful to our customers for helping us during the summer months,” said Nikole White, Senior Program Manager of Energy Services.

Darren Vandermolen and his wife, Sheri, are one couple who found value in the Smart Rewards program.

The Vandermolens spend much of their days inside their eastside house where they work at home.

“We both think the program has been an excellent way to cut strain on the grid while still allowing the customer full control of temperature adjustments,” Sheri said.

Smart Rewards savings offer a timely cushion when it’s needed most, including on Aug. 6, when Tucson hit a new peak demand record. That day, TEP initiated a conservation event to ease demand on the grid.

“It alleviated the stress on the system and our need to purchase additional power during that time,” said Jessica Berry, Supervisor of Energy Programs. “We were happy to have that option and we’re appreciative of the customers who were willing to join in.”

Customers who participate in the Smart Rewards program receive a $50 e-gift card for allowing small, temporary adjustments to their thermostats in times of peak energy demand. They also receive another $40 gift card for each year they remain in the program.

The program runs from June 1 through Sept. 30 each year. TEP is looking for more participants for 2026.
