Tucson, Ariz. – Tucson Electric Power (TEP) is offering strategies to help customers manage costs during the summer when air conditioners tend to run longer, which can lead to higher energy use and higher bills for many households. Here are ways customers can manage their summertime energy bills.

  • Sign up for Budget Billing to avoid surprises on your bills. Instead of seeing spikes during the hottest time of the year, Budget Billing allows you to pay the same amount each month based on your average annual usage. Your consistent bill can help you better manage your budget. The amount may be adjusted periodically to reflect changes in energy use or pricing. Read about the difference it made for one customer.
  • Use your air conditioning wisely. Cooling your home accounts for a large portion of summer energy use. Setting your thermostat at the highest temperature that’s comfortable for you can help keep costs in check. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends 78 degrees during the summer months. Ceiling or oscillating fans can help you feel cooler while using less energy than your air conditioner, and using shades or curtains, particularly in west-facing rooms, can block afternoon heat. Regular maintenance helps your air conditioning unit run more efficiently.
  • Keep an eye on your energy use. My Energy Usage is an online tool you can use to track daily and hourly electricity use, compare it to past months and years and see how much energy you use during on- and off-peak times. The tool can help you decide whether one of our flexible pricing plans might be a good fit for your home. Log in to your TEP account online or on our mobile app to get started.
  • Explore additional ways to save. We offer a variety of no‑cost and low‑cost programs to help reduce energy use at home, from simple tips you can use right away to rebates on qualifying energy-efficient products and services. You’ll also find energy-saving opportunities in every room of your home with these short videos.
  • Reach out if you’re struggling. If you’re having trouble keeping up with your bill, please let us know. Our Customer Care team is ready to help customers review their options and find energy-saving strategies. Customers are encouraged to call us at 520-623-7711. You may qualify for payment assistance or flexible options designed to help during challenging times.

TEP does not disconnect residential electric service for non-payment from June 1 through Oct. 15. This moratorium, established by the Arizona Corporation Commission, is intended to protect public safety through the hot summer season. We encourage customers not to skip any payments throughout these months, since they may accumulate a large balance that will be hard to pay when cooler weather resumes. Outside of the moratorium period, TEP does not disconnect residential electric service when temperatures are expected to be above 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

TEP provides safe, reliable electric service to 457,000 customers in Southern Arizona and maintains one of the nation’s most reliable electric grids. For more than 130 years, TEP has invested in the energy infrastructure that powers homes, businesses, and community institutions while advancing toward a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
