TEP is helping customers achieve energy savings through ready-made kits and video instructions to improve energy efficiency at home.
TEP’s new kits are available for free to low-income customers, in a limited capacity, or at a reduced price through the TEP Marketplace.
“Our do-it-yourself weatherization kits empower customers to weatherproof their homes with simple, affordable steps that make a real difference, helping homes stay comfortable while reducing energy bills season after season,” said Erica Gutierrez, Supervisor of Customer Care and Special Plans.
The weatherization kits include six easy-to-install items that are useful for all types of households – big or small, rented or owned. These items help homes withstand various weather conditions, helping to reduce energy use and lowering bills. The kits include:
- Window insulating with window film
- Closed-cell foam tape
- Switch/outlet gaskets
- Rope caulk
- Self-stick door sweep
- V-type, adhesive-backed backed weatherstripping
Kits for Low-income Customers
The idea for the kits came from TEP employees who are exploring ways to make bills more affordable for customers.
“The kits were created to support customers who are struggling with their bills, giving them the tools and confidence to take immediate action in reducing energy use and lowering monthly costs,” Gutierrez said.
The pilot program began this summer. The kits were unveiled to local agency partners during an August event hosted by TEP in which representatives collaborate on ways to assist customers with their bills. A demonstration was conducted to show the ease of the items.
TEP recently started distributing kits at designated events, including a diaper drive this summer and a Home Energizer Workshop in October. TEP plans to target events and neighborhoods where customers are identified as the most vulnerable.
Agency partners now can request weatherization kits so they can distribute them to qualified, low-income clients.
Discounted Bundles for Sale
All TEP customers can buy the weatherization kits on the TEP Marketplace, an online store that sells energy-efficient items with instant rebates or discounts.
TEP experts bundled the items to make it simple for purchase. The cost is $16.47 for the six items – a collective savings of more than $11.
If customers don’t want the full kit, the individual items are also available for sale on the Marketplace.
“At TEP, we’re always looking for ways to help our customers save energy and stay comfortable. That’s why our Marketplace now offers weatherization kits and more energy-saving tools that make it simple to seal leaks, cut energy waste, and lower bills,” said America Miranda, Program Manager for Energy Programs. “It’s all part of our commitment to helping our customers use energy wisely and keep their home comfortable year round.”
DIY with Videos
To help customers install the items, TEP produced videos that give step-by-step instructions. A TEP expert installer gives directions in the videos for each item on a video playlist.
In addition to the weatherization kit items, do-it-yourself videos are available for other household energy-efficiency measures.
Flyers with a QR code linking to the videos are included with the kits.
