TEP customers can earn rewards by modestly reducing energy consumption during peak usage periods, reducing strain on our local electric grid and supporting a more sustainable environment.

Our Smart Rewards program for customers with smart thermostats is continuing for its third year. Two new programs are coming soon, for owners of battery storage systems and electric vehicles.

Energy Storage Rewards

TEP is looking for customers with qualifying home battery systems who want to earn incentives for supporting grid stability.

By enrolling in our Energy Storage Regards program, customers agree to allow TEP to use the energy stored in their home batteries during peak usage periods. Opt-outs are available at any time.

Customers with Tesla or SolarEdge battery storage systems may be eligible to participate in the program. Customers can decide the amount of energy to share, up to the full capacity of the battery. The more you share, the greater the compensation you can receive. A typical customer could receive $360 per season (summer and winter) or $720 per year.

The program will help TEP serve our community’s peak energy needs while reducing our need to purchase power or build new generating resources. This is expected to start in early summer.

Smart Charge

We’re also incentivizing electric vehicle owners to relieve the grid by charging their vehicles at certain times. In a limited pilot program, we’ll be offering $5 bill credits to EV owners to plug in their cars during off-peak times, freeing up more energy during times of high demand. Participants can opt out of the program at any time.

While TEP is not recruiting new EV owners at this time, we may expand the program in the future if it’s effective. To learn more, send an email to SmartCharge@tep.com.

Smart Rewards

TEP’s Smart Rewards program produced great results by reducing energy use during times of high energy demand last summer. This year, we’re expecting to expand on that success by enrolling more TEP customers in the program.

Through Smart Rewards, customers allow their thermostat provider to make small, temporary temperature adjustments during peak usage periods. Opt-outs are allowed at any time.

Customers always maintain control of their thermostats. If during the event a customer no longer wishes to participate, customers can simply change the temperature setting on the thermostat to automatically opt out. Just for enrolling, customers can earn a $50 Prepaid Mastercard. By staying in the program through the end of the season Sept. 30, customer can receive an additional $40 Prepaid Mastercard per thermostat (up to two thermostats).
